With the adoption of the 2030 Agenda, the international community has recognised – for the first time – the role of culture in sustainable development. The 2030 Agenda reflects a broad view of culture that encompasses the contribution of culture to sustainable development including through cultural heritage, the creative industries, local culture and products, creativity and innovation, local communities, local materials, and cultural diversity. With Sustainable Development Goal 11 (SDG 11), countries have pledged to “make cities and human settlements inclusive, safe, resilient and sustainable”. Within this goal, Target 11.4 aims to “strengthen efforts to protect and safeguard the world’s cultural and natural heritage”.

Cultural and natural heritage has the ability to strengthen a sense of community by consolidating its relationship to a place and can boost regional economies through sustainable tourism practices. Furthermore, heritage can foster cultural resilience, which can reduce disaster risk and support social cohesion. In an increasingly globalised and fragmented world, protecting heritage is a vital component in achieving sustainable development across all sectors. For all these reasons it is important to build a knowledge base for action. It’s important schools engage students  in social and environmental topics with educational and participatory activities.

Students aged 16 to 19 will discover street artists from their countries and from all over the world. They will try and find a definition of art, and of street art. Then they will discuss if street art should enter museums.
